SEKATEN FESTIVAL
Sekaten
Sekaten ceremony is an annual event organized by the people of Yogyakarta
to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. This event is held every
5th of Mulud or Rabiul in the beginning of the Hijri year.
Sekaten isn’t olny held in Yogyakarta, but also in The North of Alun-Alun
Surakarta. Same as in Surakarta (Solo),
in Yogyakarta, Sekaten also held in North of Alun-Alun Yogyakarta, its nearby
Titik Nol Kilometer Jogja City.
Sekaten comes from word Syahadatain or two sentences of Syahadat. At
first, Sekaten was held to attract attention so public would know Islam better.
Pangeran Mangkubumi or Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I who first held Sekaten. Now
it has become an annual event as well as A People's Party.
Sekaten events series is very interesting. This event was held for a full
week. The series of event began with Abdi Dalem's procession on the first
night. This procession also bringing two important sets of gamelan called Kyai
Nogowilongo and Kyai Gunturmadu.
This two gamelan were placed on different sides on the front page of the
Agung Mosque. Kyai Nogowilongo gamelan is placed in the north, while Kyai Gunturmadu gamelan is placed in the southern pagongan.
Both are used for 7 days.
In the North of Jogja Square, it will be fulfill by visitor, from the
Jogja it own to foreign tourists. There are festival lights decorating
the square, various games that have cultural nuances to those that are
trending, and also typical culinary Jogja.
The highlight of the event was marked by
Grebeg Muludan, the day of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday which began at 8 am,
accompanied by Kraton soldiers, they are Wirobrojo, Daeng, Patangpuluh,
Jogokaryo, Prawirotomo, Nyutro, Ketanggung, Mantrijero, Rurakso, and Bugis.
By carrying a Gunungan from sticky rice,
food, vegetables, fruits that will be taken from the Palace of Kemandungan past
Sithinggil and Paelaran to The Agung Mosque. This Gunungan shows the welfare of
the Mataram Kingdom which has the meaning “from People back to People”.
Gunungan which comes from agricultural
products of the Yogyakarta community, then returned to them. This is very noble
cultural value. Then the event followed by Tumplak Wajik, which was two days
before the Grebeg Muludan event began. the event was about playing musical
instruments that were beaten like kentongan and lumpang. then developing
popular Javanese popular songs.
